NODE Gallery Night – Robert Seidel

12 Dec 2024 , 19:00 23:30 CET

The NODE Institute launches a new format with this Gallery Night, spotlighting the vision of selected artists within an immersive experience.

In collaboration with Studio1111, we invite renowned artists to present their work inside the Studio’s unique projection cave, a destination redefining art, space, music, and community in the 21st century. This edition features Robert Seidel, a pioneer of digital and abstract filmmaking with more than 20 years of groundbreaking work. In a retrospective screening moderated by NODE’s Harshini J. Karunaratne, we journey through key milestones of Seidel’s creative universe, fostering dialogue between the artist and the community.

The evening will conclude with an experimental audio-visual performance: Markus Popp, working under his genre-defining pseudonym OVALwill be accompanied by Stefan Kraus (MXZEHN), who will reimagine Seidel’s visuals in a transformative live remix, creating a space- and time-bending experience.

True to their mission, the NODE Institute and Studio1111 aim to foster an open, supportive creative space, cultivating collaboration and opportunity in an increasingly challenging world.

20 Years of Digital Experiments : AN IMMERSIVE TIMELINE

In 2004, Robert Seidel’s experimental film “_grau” redefined digital filmmaking, blending 3D animation, physical simulation, and medical data into an emotional portrait of a car accident. Garnering awards like Best Experimental Film at the Ottawa Animation Festival, it established Seidel as a visionary in experimental digital cinema.

Now, the Berlin-based filmmaker is celebrating 20 years of creating digital ‘moving images’ with a retrospective screening. Spanning films, video installations, large-scale projections and AI-driven works, his abstract creations explore the evolving language of 21st century abstraction and it’s emotional impact in a hyper-structured world.

OVAL x MXZEHN X ROBERT SEIDEL : AN AUDIOVISUAL EXPERIENCE

The second half of the evening invites audiences deeper into Robert Seidel’s visual world with a live performance by Markus Popp, known as OVAL, and Stefan Kraus, aka MXZEHN.

Popp’s music, celebrated for its groundbreaking musical innovation since the 1990s, blends playful creativity with technical mastery. His latest album, “Romantiq”, explores the theme of romanticism in digital music and is based on the score of Seidel’s projection for the opening of the Museum of Romanticism in Frankfurt am Main.

Kraus, an acclaimed video artist, will remix Seidel’s video archive live using a custom TouchDesigner application, crafting an impromptu visual performance. With roots in live video mixing since 1999, Kraus’s work pushes the boundaries of video art, merging experimentation and production to create immersive, cutting-edge experiences.
