The main objective of this workshop is to draw inspiration from compositional choreographic techniques for stage and apply them to the interactive digital realm. Along the duration of the course we’ll tap into the potency of our bodies, as primary tools for knowledge creation and expression. Starting from there, we’ll translate this knowledge into the medium of interactive/visual digital composition using TouchDesigner.

Generative Choreography

The program consists of six weeks of classes culminating in a day of presentations that will be showcased either as separate artworks or as one collectively orchestrated performance.

The main objective of this workshop is to draw inspiration from compositional choreographic techniques for stage and apply them to the interactive digital realm. In performance making, as well as in life, our body is our primary instrument for knowledge creation and our main medium for expression. Along the duration of the course we’ll tap into the potency of our bodies, as primary tools for knowledge creation and expression. Starting from there, we’ll translate this knowledge into the medium of interactive/visual digital composition using TouchDesigner.

This embodied exploration is moderated through the Viewpoints system, a philosophy and technique for creating movement on stage, developed by Anne Bogart and Tina Landau, based on the original framework by Marie Overlie. This system can be seen as a starting point, a scaffolding, a template, an open invitation, and not a rigid framework. Through viewpoints, as a process of guided awareness, we’ll build an understanding of our bodies in space, of our sensory inputs, physical movement, imaginative associations, emotional states, emergent relationships and spatial (physical/virtual) context into a fluid invitation for real-time group improvisation. Each week we’ll focus on a number of viewpoints and lift them from the physical realm to screen. Our physical stage (during this course) is remotely-distributed and consists of the space which our physical bodies occupy while virtually connected through zoom. During our virtual connection, we inhabit the same timeframe. Each session, we’ll explore a number of viewpoints using the online meeting space as our virtual canvas. Here, we become virtual dancers, engaged in ensemble building exercises on this virtual stage. It’s an experimental act of virtualisation, on which we embark upon collectively. What do we take from your bodies, what do we take from our fragmented physical stage into the virtual canvas?

Each session is divided into a (60 mins) lecturing part, in which new concepts will be introduced, and into a practical part, in which we’ll experiment with these concepts in an interactive format. During the hands-on practice we’ll explore, through playful exercises, strategies drawing from both performing-arts and digital design. The focus is on the interplay between technical and dramaturgical elements, while we dive in and out of physical and virtual spaces, to create emotion and engagement.

Together we’ll explore not only this translation, but all the modifiers involved in the process: What do we lose and what do we gain in the process of translation from stage to screen? It’s a question of compositional / aesthetic possibilities (and choices!), but also an act of radical thinking, touching upon the politics of representation.

About the Instructors

This course is experimental in nature, and draws upon the research and expertise (but also imagination) of the two instructors – Helin and Diana. They bring together theories from performance art, new media art, gender and technology studies, and human-computer interaction in a unique blend, shaped by their interests and specially designed for this class. Their aim is to explore new principles for building composition and delve into topics such as ethics of embodied representation, poetry, and collective authorship. They are both excited to share their knowledge and explore the creative potential of this new format together with you!

Helin Ulas, born in 1990 in Turkey, is a Berlin-based visual artist and educator using technology to explore socio-political impacts on communities. As a member of Automaton and an educator at HfG Karlsruhe, she bridges art, technology, and community engagement. Ulas’s work has been on display at D’haus, Lumen Prize, and Ars Electronica. Helin brings in expertise in visual design involving a long-term experience of working with TD which she uses as a tool-of-choice in many of her artistic projects. Furthermore, she has a keen interest in experimental aesthetics and the politics of representation.
