Spatial Audio – An Open Source Workflow

Recording of January 10th 2025
1 Session In English Language

Introduction to Spatial Audio

This course is designed for those interested in working with spatial audio. You will become familiar with the terms and tools common in spatial audio. It is an introductory course to get you started with a simple and free workflow that is easy to adopt. It deals with technical and artistic concepts that differentiate spatial audio from traditional audio workflows and concepts. To round things off, we will have a look at how to exchange data between the audio world and realtime 3D visual tools like touchdesigner or vvvv, leveraging the OSC protocol. This can be useful to e.g. share the location of sound objects.

About this course

The course proposes a simple and open source workflow, that doesn’t rely on special hardware or expensive software, making it a good entry point for anyone, especially for people with no or little previous music production background.

Andrew and Timo will go over the most common spatial audio technologies and their respective requirements with a focus on the Cockos Reaper digital audio workstation and the IEM Plugin Suite for both the cost (free) and relative ease of use.
