Are you getting tired of building a proper render environment in TouchDesigner? Wish you could have those sexy reflections, transparency, and global illumination right out of the box? As our industry continues to move away from a traditional rendering pipeline for content creation, we must consider what real-time peripherals can enhance your toolkit. Unreal Engine offers TouchDesigner users the ability to harness videogame quality rendering, while staying in the software we all love.
This class will teach you the basics of how to control Unreal scenes using common communication protocols. We will explore ways to create interactive environments, build a simple camera changer operated from TouchDesigner, and get a general view of how Unreal works. By the end of the course you will be able to interact with your own worlds and control their environments created in one of the most talked about rendering platforms today. Get ready to take your projects to another level!
Requirements
- A recent PC or MAC Computer (discrete GPU recommended) with stable internet connection
- The latest build of TouchDesigner installed
- Unreal engine 5.3.2
- NDI account with plugin installed (ndi sdk for unreal engine 5.3)
- 3-Button Mouse recommended
- Install a code editor – Visual studio community 2022 recommended + game dev tools
This course requires a basic understanding of PBR workflows. An adequate computer is needed to run Unreal Engine, please see the minimum computer requirements at epicgames.com. If you would like to follow along on your own computer, please do the following:
- Download the prerequisite software mentioned, and make sure they are running
- Download the project files
- Open the unreal project and let the shaders compile
About the Instructor
Stephen is a freelance Production Designer and New Media Artist, living in Berlin. Educated at the University of New Mexico with a focus in Architecture, he has honed his skills in parametric development, light design, 3D content creation, and digital fabrication. His career is marked by a passion for immersive entertainment, multi-media art installations, and the use of technology in architecture and performance arts.
Through global collaboration with like-minded professionals, Stephen seeks to challenge the conventional, leveraging studies in perspective and perception to break down barriers of comfort and resistance to change. With expertise in software such as Touch Designer, Unreal Engine, and Houdini, he continues to explore the boundaries of design and its impact on human emotions and decisions in both digital and physical space. Stephen’s work aims to captivate the human mind, using design to inspire change and create open-minded individuals.
