Modular Sound & VCV Rack
for Visual Artists

January 21 + 28 2026, Wednesday , 6-9 PM, Berlin Time
2 lessons at 3 hours in English Language live via Zoom, or as recording.
Recordings are available and accessible for at least one year after purchase.

Led by audiovisual artist Leon Volbers (LXT), whose work explores human–machine interaction and the evolving nature of digital connection, this course introduces the fundamentals of modular synthesis using VCV Rack 2 and shows how to connect sound and visuals in real time with TouchDesigner and VVVV. It is suitable for complete beginners as well as people with some experience in visual programming or modular tools. The workshop takes place across two sessions, with a week in between for independent exploration so participants can test ideas on their own and return with developments or questions.

In the first session, we cover the basics of signal flow and patching in a modular environment: how cables, voltage, and modules interact, and how simple building blocks can lead to more complex behaviors. Topics include oscillators, filters, envelopes, and VCAs (voltage-controlled amplifiers), as well as the difference between audio signals and control voltages.

During the week between sessions, participants are encouraged to experiment further with their own patches and creative ideas. The second session focuses on connecting sound and visuals in both directions. Audio and CV data from VCV Rack can drive and animate visuals in TouchDesigner and VVVV, while visual signals can also influence the sound synthesis, creating a feedback loop where sound and image continuously respond to each other.

By the end, participants will have a working audiovisual setup and a practical understanding of how to build modular systems where sound and visuals interact dynamically.
