Depth cameras like the Microsoft Kinect give a set of extra senses to your TouchDesigner machine. They can be used to acquire much more information about the space they surveille than normal cameras. They allow programmers to know if and how people move in front of interactive installations. They can also be used to acquire pointclouds and use them directly or as a basis for further tacking or artistic experiments. Devices like the Oak-D camera even support object recognition right on the camera.
While it initially seems easy to set up a depth camera with TouchDesigner, they come with many constraints and getting smooth and reliable results out of them can be more challenging than anticipated. The raw signals have to be processes and often one needs to add a lot of programming logic to make them useful for meaningful interaction.
Daniel will guide you through the setup of Kinect cameras, explain the pros and cons of different depth cameras product and provide you with helpful insight on the limitations but also the possibilities these devices bring to your TouchDesigner projects.
We have designed that module in a way, that you can participate even if you don’t own a device. After the live lesson you will get access to the recording and the workshop files for one year.
