Mert
Akbal
Mert Akbal is a digital media artist and academic working at the intersection of generative art, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science. Through experimentation and speculative fiction, he explores questions about the evolving relationship between technology, perception, and consciousness. Drawing inspiration from cognitive science—particularly dreaming and altered states of consciousness—he creates animated paintings for stage productions and virtual spaces.
His work has been showcased on numerous international platforms, including the International Symposium on Electronic Arts (Hong Kong, 2016; Durban, 2018), ZKM Center for Art and Media (Karlsruhe, 2018), Mirage Digital Art Festival (Lyon, 2018), Musée-École de la Perrine (Laval, 2021), re (Berlin, 2021), LASER Garden at Ars Electronica (Linz, 2021), Deutsche Oper (Berlin, 2023), Rotterdam Opera Festival (2024), Historical Museum Saar (Saarbrücken, 2023), and the German Newspaper Museum (Wadgassen, 2024).
