TouchDesigner Roundtable XXIII

Organized by The NODE Institute, the TouchDesigner Roundtable Berlin is the meeting point for creatives and developers who work with the visual development platform TouchDesigner as well as everybody who is curious about the world of interactive media art and the people behind it.

With this edition, we are going to take you to one of the most exciting new loactions in Berlin: The MONOPOL of the people – an old destillery in Reinickendorf that features a sequence of breathtaking, abstract architectural spaces, that are more than perfect for light, sound and projection artworks.

The evening will set of with a tour of the premises, before we settle down for another round of presentations from the community.

For those with an interest, Jose Alarcon, part of Monopol will lead a tour through the stunning chambers of the former distillery, situated at the junction of Reinickendorf, Mitte, and Pankow.

Monopol e.V. is a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring and nurturing creativity, collaboration, and social responsibility by providing support for innovative art and social projects. Through the organization of art exhibitions, performances, workshops, and conferences, Monopol e.V. seeks to establish relationships within local and international communities. During his upcoming presentation, Jose Alarcon will delve into their programming for this one-of-a-kind location and unveil their plans to engage the creative media arts community in the creation of a new, immersive light and media art hotspot.

Irina Petrova is about to complete her master’s degree at Porto University. Her research centers around a crucial question: how can we devise interactive, immersive narratives that foster creativity through collaboration? This interdisciplinary inquiry incorporates multiple research areas, such as Human-Computer Interaction, the Internet of Things, software engineering, philosophy of art, and product design. During her presentation, Irina will explore the potential of extending generative art into an interactive narrative in the physical realm. How do we initiate the process of scripting such events? Which key aspects must be addressed?

Harshini J. Karunaratne, a digital artist hailing from Sri Lanka and Peru, creates thought-provoking projects at the intersection of photography, theatre, and technology. With a foundation in artistic research and performance, Harshini delves into themes of eco-grief, gender, the body, and the afterlife. During their upcoming presentation, Harshini will delve into the impact of proto-cinematic devices, earlier modes of perception, and past-century imagery on their work with Touchdesigner. They will highlight the significance of analog components and embodied experiences as essential to their digital artistic practice.

Daniel Dalfovo, a media artist residing in Berlin, crafts works that thrive and unfold in space. Fueling his creations is a critical zeal and fascination for nascent technologies. Consequently, a significant portion of his work serves as a socio-technological commentary or conjecture on imminent future scenarios. In addition to his pursuits as a media artist, Daniel recently established ATELIER-E, a multi-disciplinary studio specializing in creative technologies and new media. During his presentation, Daniel will delve into the tools he devised to integrate the virtual realm with the physical world. Specifically, he will explore how to rectify the imperfect XYZ coordinates of the tangible world for use with simulations in TouchDesigner.
