VJing : Playfulness as a Gateway to Media Art
Many practices that have shaped (new) media art originate in VJing. A large number of artists working with real-time media began by performing visuals live alongside music. VJing is the improvised, real-time creation and manipulation of visuals—played much like a musical instrument. Despite its impact, it is often dismissed as unserious. This panel examines how playfulness and experimentation in VJing drive innovation and foster community, bringing people together through shared experiences of art and music. We will discuss how these practices can be valued as ends in themselves, not merely as tools for gaining recognition, and how VJing deserves recognition as a craft, cultural practice, and vital art form.
