How to make New Media Art the fun way?

New Media Week calls Berlin a global epicenter for digital art and while we agree, we’d like to add that Berlin is also a hot spot for education in visual programming for experience designers from around the world. So when we were asked, what we would like to contribute to this city wide celebration of digital creativity, the answer cam easy to us:

A bit more than six years ago, we started to host vvvv and TouchDesigner workshops and meetups at The NODE Institute in Neukölln and while we strongly believe in the benefits of online education, we often think back to those early days, when a dozen people came together to spend the day in the world of visual programming. Many careers and friendships have started here.

To celebrate New Media Week, we look forward to gather once again a dozend curious minds in our studio and take them on a trip into the free thinking environment : TouchDesigner.

Join NODE Institute founder and media artist Stefan Kraus if you want to learn more about the tool, that became for many a passion and an inspiring entry into the world of new media art and the craft of interactive media installations and performances.

A friendly introduction to creating interactive real-time audiovisual media with the visual programming environment TouchDesigner, led by Stefan Kraus.

After a coffee-fueled introduction to the origins and current applications of TouchDesigner—and its unique ability to put modern computer graphics and much of their magic at your fingertips—Stefan will guide you through building a simple yet fun visual instrument. This instrument will let you perform interactive, 3D-rendered visuals in real time, much like you would play a musical instrument.

In a fun and casual way, you’ll discover both the possibilities and challenges of real-time media and experience the joy of experimentation. If you’re curious about new media art but don’t know where to start, this is the perfect day to explore visual programming!

About the Instructor

Stefan Kraus, media artist and educator, is co-founder of The NODE Institute, the projection mapping festival, Genius Loci Weimar, and the media art studio, MXZEHN. Trained as an architect, Stefan explores the augmentation of physical structures using interactive and generative media and the narrative potential of abstract imagery. He holds a special interest in the art of live visual improvisation and creates augmented scenographies for theater, dance and music performances. After teaching Interaction Design at Bauhaus-University Weimar for over two decades, Stefan now enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience with the creative coding community. His studio produces interactive installations, live media performances and augmented reality applications for commercial clients, festivals, institutions and exhibitions.
