Like Dew And Like Lightning — Meet Aka Chang

Join us for a Meet the Artist evening with Aka Chang, whose practice explores light as a spatial and structural medium. Working with lasers, beams, and atmospheric elements like smoke, he creates geometric forms that evolve in response to sound and environment.
On the eve of his solo exhibition Like Dew And Like Lightning, we open up his process: starting with an artist talk, and the opening performance, we conclude with an exclusive behind-the-scenes session. Together, these sessions offer insight into how light-based works are developed—from early visual experiments to technical setup and spatial considerations.
The evening closes with a casual social gathering.

Aka Chang (Taiwan, 1979), will present his first international solo exhibition in Berlin.
‘Like dew and like lightning’, a new installation and the centrepiece of the exhibition, is a physical manifestation of a verse from the Diamond Sutra. Within the Buddhist philosophy of Emptiness and Non-attachment, it seeks to create a natural, physical, and essential state.
The exhibition features three large-scale, site-specific laser light installations that integrate photosensitive materials, a water screen, and kinetic motors, translating artist’s unique narrative and Eastern philosophical perspective into the context of the modern technological era, and inviting the audience to rethink the ‘Being’, the essence of immersive experience in our time.

Two Taiwanese performance collectives engage with Aka Chang’s three installations in a dialogue on humanity, nature, animism, and technology.
InTW Studio, led by Hsieh Hsiao-Ting and Hsieh Hsiao-Wei, explores body, space, live perception, immersive performance, and XR technologies through contemporary dance and site-specific creation.
Ty Chen focuses on attention, flame, and body as rhythmic gateways, guiding audiences into trance-like states where perception dissolves and presence emerges through silence and shifting reality.

A central part of the evening is a guided tour through three of Aka Chang’s installations. We will walk through each work, exploring the artistic ideas behind them and how these concepts are translated into technical systems. Aka will be joined by Dan Molnar aka Function Store as well as Amin Shahsavar, who contributed control software and lighting design to the mix. From visual composition to real-time control in TouchDesigner, this session offers a rare look at how artistic intent becomes a functioning light installation.
