Realtime 3D Interactive Visuals with Unreal and TouchDesigner

Join Alon Hammer in person at the NODE Institute in Berlin for a hands-on workshop exploring the creative potential of real-time visuals across Unreal Engine and TouchDesigner. With a practice rooted in real-time 3D, virtual production, projection mapping, and interactive installations, Alon will guide participants through key concepts in generative visuals and hybrid workflows—demonstrating how these powerful tools differ, complement each other, and can be integrated for dynamic audiovisual experiences.

Through real-world examples, technical deep dives and provided example projects you’ll explore Blueprinting in Unreal, the OffWorldLive plugin for texture sharing, and techniques for optimizing performance in both platforms. Topics include level streaming, lighting, and blueprint animation in Unreal, alongside reactive logic, parameter control, and post-processing in TouchDesigner. The workshop also covers OSC, Spout, NDI, and setting up a complete texture pipeline between the two environments.

Ideal for artists, designers, and technologists, this in-person workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from Alon’s hybrid workflow and gain practical skills for creating cutting-edge interactive visuals.

About the instructor

Alon Hammer aka REM, is a VJ and audiovisual performer, whose work spans real-time 3D, virtual production, projection mapping, and interactive installations. Rooted in explorations of altered states and emotional intensity, his visuals aim to create immersive, transformative experiences. Alon is also the creative force behind The Visual Cast – a live-recorded podcast highlighting voices from the visual art and performance community.


What you will learn

Real-Time Visual Concepts & Cross-Platform Workflows

Understanding generative visuals and the differences/synergies between Unreal Engine and TouchDesigner.

Project Examples & Communication Protocols

Overview of real-world projects using OSC, Midi, Spout & NDI utilizing the OffWorldLive plugin (demo licenses available) for texture sharing and control.

Unreal Engine Techniques

Level streaming, lighting, Blueprints, material creation & controlling them via blueprints, animation methods (Blueprint vs. Sequencer), and performance optimization.

TouchDesigner Logic & Animation

Building interactive logic with parameters, triggers, gates, and post-processing effects; organizing live setups for flexibility.

Texture Pipeline Integration Between UE & TD

Setting up texture inputs/outputs, working with PBR materials, render targets, and remapping for projection using Stoner.


Requirements

This module is made for participants, who have a basic understanding of TouchDesigner. If you just getting started, please visit our Beginners Course first.

  • A recent PC or MAC Computer (discrete GPU recommended) with stable internet connection
  • The latest stable TouchDesigner build installed
  • Unreal Engine 5.6 installed
  • 3-Button Mouse recommended
  • Optional: Bring your own MIDI controller or tablet with TouchOSC
