Introduction to Digital Sound Synthesis with SuperCollider

February 4th 2026, Wednesday , 6-9 PM, Berlin Time
1 lessons at 3 hours in English Language live via Zoom, or as recording.
Recordings are available and accessible for at least one year after purchase.
Visual and auditory expression often evolve together, complementing one another to form a unified artistic language. This workshop introduces digital sound synthesis as an expressive medium for both musicians and visual artists. We will start from the fundamental building blocks of digital audio such as oscillators, envelopes and amplifiers and gradually move toward shaping textures, tones and rhythmic structures. Each concept will be introduced step-by-step with clear examples that participants can follow and modify in real time.
We will be working with SuperCollider, an open-source software environment that allows sound generation and algorithmic composition through code. SuperCollider is widely used in sound art, live coding performance, installation work and experimental music. Along the way, the workshop will also demonstrate how synthesized sound can interact with visual platforms such as VVVV or TouchDesigner, using MIDI and OSC communication to create synchronized and reactive audio-visual experiences.
This workshop encourages experimentation, playful engagement and curiosity. No previous programming background is required.
Requirements
This course is designed for beginners in digital sound synthesis. It is suitable for artists, musicians, programmers and anyone curious to work creatively with sound. No prior experience with coding or music theory is necessary.
- Headphones, a working computer and a stable internet connection
- The latest build of TouchDesigner or VVVV installed
- SuperCollider installed and able to boot the audio server successfully
(After installing, open SuperCollider and select “Boot Server” from the menu)

About the Instructor
Jens Vetter is a media artist, musician and researcher based in Vienna. His practice sits at the intersection of sound art, interactive installations, musical performance, digital culture and technology. He builds musical instruments that challenge conventional ideas of music-making, emphasizing tangible interaction, embodied feedback, and inclusive sonic interaction. As a musician he uses various synthesizers for just-in-time composition and energetic live performances. His work has been presented at international exhibitions and festivals such as Lab30 (DE), Mutek SF (US), Ars Electronica (AT) or Speculum Artium (SI).
